The Mitchells vs. The Machines

The Mitchells vs. The Machines ★★★★

A movie about a queer film kid who feels that not many people, especially her father, understand her. It's quite relatable.

The plot here is pretty predictable, but my eyes still watered a bit at some points, so it would be disingenuous for me to say I cared much about that. It's executed almost perfectly, especially the animation. When it comes to the animation in this movie, Spider-Verse, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, there's a certain element to the camera movement that I really appreciate. It feels less like this movie was animated on computers and more like the people behind the film created this CG world, found a portal to that world, and then went inside of it to make the film.

And of course, it's wonderful to see the protagonist of a kids movie be a lesbian without any sort of ambiguity. She walks around with a gay pride pin on her jacket and she has a girlfriend who loves Blade Runner.
