    Undercover Brother

This is a decent comedy. I laughed a handful of times but most of the humor feels very dated at this point. The whole movie feels like a significantly worse version of Black Dynamite. It's cool seeing both Neil Patrick Harris and Denise Richards in a movie together after Starship Troopers, which I appreciated. I honestly don't have much to say about this, I laughed a few times but not nearly enough for me to consider this a good comedy.

    Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin

I've been wanting to check this one out for a while but I kept forgetting about it. This is a surprisingly great looking movie considering it's supposed to be found footage, although the premise being centered around a documentary crew helps a bit with that. The plot is pretty simple and doesn't feel like it has much to do with the rest of the franchise, which is probably a good thing at this point.

The characters in this are pretty…

  • Eternals

This was the first Marvel movie i missed in theaters since Doctor Strange, and I don't really regret that. The first 45 minutes are very poorly paced and sloppy. Not to mention the movie (at least on Disney+) constantly shifts aspect ratios which was very annoying. However, about 45 minutes into this two and a half hour film there's a reveal that finally gave me something to latch onto. From there I ended up finding a lot to love in…

  • Scream

I went to the fan event which had a mini retrospective on the franchise before the movie and a live Q&A afterwards. I really enjoy the Scream franchise and I was excited for this movie, but I can't say I got very much out of it. The positives of this movie are that its quite entertaining, the new characters are pretty good, and it definitely has the goriest and most violent kills in the series without question.

    That said though,…

  • Kung Fu Panda 3

    Kung Fu Panda 3

I honestly cannot believe that this is considered the weakest entry in the series. Kung Fu Panda 3 has some of the best animation I've ever seen in a movie, and it manages to be a phenomenal conclusion to, in my opinion, the most underrated animated trilogy I can think of. While I will admit that Kai is a weaker villain than Lord Shen was in the second film, he manages to still be a very intimidating threat that makes…

    2021 Ranked

I still have a lot of 2021 films I still have to get to, but Riders of Justice is easily the best hidden gem of the year. I didn't even know about this movie until a couple weeks ago, and it quickly became something I had to see. This is a very special movie, not only is it a very unique subversion of the revenge film, but it's also a very powerful portrait of how people process and…

  • Willy's Wonderland

    Willy's Wonderland

Maybe it's because Prisoners of the Ghostland disappointed me so much, but I went into this expecting it to be terrible and I had a great time. There's more to the story than I expected, even though that's not saying much. The comedy works pretty well and I actually kinda like that Nicolas Cage doesn't speak, but this movie might be better if he did. I'd definitely rewatch this, it's just fun more than anything else and that's all it needed to be.

  • Porco Rosso

    Porco Rosso

Another delightful film from Studio Ghibli. The English dub was quite good, and they usually are for these films. I found the story and characters to all be very endearing even though the stakes are quite low. This really is a very light and fun movie all the way through. I like the themes it tackles as well, although I would've liked more from them and the ending didn't give me enough closure. Still a great movie even though it's the weakest Ghibli movie I've seen so far.

  • Zola

Another great film I missed last year, Zola was surprisingly delightful despite how dark the story is. I had no idea this was based on a true story, but learning that this movie came from a Twitter thread is absolutely insane. It's such a wild story that is told through a beautiful combination of interesting visuals and an awesome score with great performances all around.

Riley Keough is unrecognizable and absolutely kills it here, I was genuinely shocked seeing her…

  • The Matrix Resurrections

    The Matrix Resurrections

What an absolute blast of a movie! Matrix Resurrections could have been yet another generic revival movie filled with nostalgia, and originally that's what I assumed it would be. However, much like the original, Matrix Resurrections is a counterculture action film that has much more going on besides the central romance and incredible action sequences.

The way this movie dissects and picks apart both modern audiences and the concept of film franchises in general is so damn smart. It's very…

    tick, tick...BOOM!

This absolutely surprised me. I cried like a baby during this, and I loved every minute of it. The songs are incredible, and the story was very engaging. Andrew Garfield deserves all the Oscar buzz he's getting because he absolutely kills it here. I'll definitely be listening to the soundtrack for this and will definitely be rewatching this movie in the future. Lin-Manuel Miranda absolutely killed it this year, huh?

  • Censor

I somehow saved a bunch of the best releases from 2021 for last because Censor is another phenomenal film that I missed last year. As a huge fan of genre films and their history, seeing a film about the "video nasties" era in the UK is awesome. It also makes a surprisingly excellent companion piece to Saint Maud (2021) and I would recommend a double feature if you have yet to see either of them.

    The way this film unfolds…
