Tal G’s review published on Letterboxd:
A truly bizarre, subtly unsettling, satiric and absurdist comedy that rips into the ideal American suburb lifestyle.
This film felt more like an allegorical tale rather than a straight up narrative story, despite the fact that it does technically have a plot. Every aspect of it is some form of criticism, mockery or heightened exaggeration, so that together it all forms a kind of undressing mirror to put infront of the idealized American suburbia dream. The way this is achieved through delightfully entertaining offbeat humor that at the same time manages to chillingly crawl under your skin by the end of it all, is quite an achievement - and especially for these two directorial debuts by the two lead actresses.
It was also great to see that this film had more than just a biting message, as the visuals, the sets and the costume designs all excited the eye with sweet colours, hilarious distorted aspects of suburban life and numerous other small details that peppered the world of the film, made it feel truly comprehensive and well thought out. The realization of what visual form the basic critical thesis of this film should take on was inspired and beautiful.
And then to make this all work, the cast that peopled the Greener Grass community did a fine job with working the ideas into this subtly grotesque reality. The casting was pretty perfect for each role, and each actor really did their best to keep in with this very specific satirical tone. It was satisfying to see. The directors did a wonderful job with bringing it all together.
Even musically and visually this film managed to impress. The main musical theme felt as if it immediately conveyed the entire thesis in its notes - its usage was very pleasing and sort of cathartic. Then the cinematography was worked very well and effectively to enrich the comedy and the jokes throughout the film. Some of the visual gags worked amazingly well, and it was refreshing to see this sort of visual humor pulled off so well.
The humor in general was surprisingly effective and unexpected. While the setup for some jokes might look orthodox, the punchlines in this film are almost always wholly unexpected. It was highly entertaining.
This film was a great out-of-nowhere surprise. It offers a lot and is a fine example of how meaningful comedy can be when it's not just a hollow product to consume and shit out - no intellectual or spiritual nutrition to gain. While not all of its criticism is original or unheard of, it was presented creatively in a refreshing manner. Definitely recommended.
