I hardly know what to make of this movie. Are we simply giving this guy a pass because he directed Donnie Darko? There’s some really funny stuff in here, but to call it “oddly prescient” (as Mubi tried to sell it) is certainly an exaggeration. I will give it one thing and it is that it does capture the chaotic nature of the world we live in, a world in which it is increasingly impossible to predict what will happen next and where generalized explanations have no place.
On another note, the more I look back on Sara Michelle Gellar’s career, the more I appreciate her work. She absolutely nails every one of her characters. Favourite quote: “Scientists are saying the future is going to be far more futuristic than they originally predicted.” This stupid sentence manages to comment on so many things: the absurdity of language, the obsession with technological and scientific “progress”, the redundancy of cultural productions, and more!
