Honestly, I didn't think Pixar had it in them anymore.
I've gotta say, it's hard for me to articulate thoughts while they're only half finished, so I definitely need to rewatch this one.
But um, first impressions are it's great.
I feel very refreshed having watched a film that cares. It's been a while.
When the first trailer dropped, I was real excited, until we saw the soul world stuff, which had me a little disappointed. I was expecting something more like Up, which has a great heart, but let it get buried underneath the expectations of an animated film. And I don't think I was entirely alone in that.
Thankfully, I was wrong. Soul didn't just have these feelings and ideas, then put them in a film. Those things are the film, as they deserve to be.
I'd like to talk more about the specifics, but I need a second watch to properly digest Soul. For now though, I'm very pleased that there's a heart still beating somewhere in Pixar.
