When I moved to Japan, I kinda expected to see a lot of the themes tackled in the japanese movies I'd seen with my own eyes. I expected to understand the movies better, and I hoped that my experience with watching japanese films helped me understand japanese society as well.

That definitely happened, to an extent. It's amazing how directors like Ishikawa Hiroshi and Iwai Sunji can give insight into japanese culture in such an intuitive and clearcut way.

I've never felt this kind of uncertainty about a film before. It's not the "I don't know if I like it" type of uncertainty, I loved this, it's just that, even with a 2h runtime, I wanted more time with these characters, they just have this beautiful simple-complexity. This was probably my 10th rewatch of the show, but damn each one of the first 6 episodes really did a number on me this time around. They work perfectly as standalone episodes (yes, even 1+2 that have to be watched together). The structure of the episodes is perfect and each one hits a different emotional note that is a fantastic introduction to this world and its characters.

Can't believe this is possible, but here we are - Lynch's take is way more interesting and inspired.
