Escape from New York ★★★★½

Like a larger scale variant of his first great film, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, John Carpenter revels in his particular brand of pseudo-Hawskian machismo with a cast of tough broads and laconic hero's. Carpenter shares sensibilities with his equally gifted contemporary, Walter Hill, in a similar appreciation of pop-artistry and revelation of character through action and wry dialogue.
