Only Angels Have Wings is a brilliant drama from Howard Hawks that just keeps on delivering emotionally satisfying moments with characters that we grow to care about. It is all set up effortlessly in the opening sequence as we follow Jean Arthur making her way from the dock to a bar next to an airfield, giving us a perfect introduction to the location and the dynamics of the characters. I love the setting of this cozy, hole-in-the-wall that is tucked…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

On my first viewing of No Country for Old Men, I was loving it until the off-screen death of Josh Brolin's character, Llewelyn Moss, which left me feeling a little disappointed. I guess I wanted the Hollywood type ending where all the characters have a final, dramatic shootout but it took me the second viewing to understand that it would have undercut the themes. Besides, it is not really needed because the Coen Brothers deliver one of the most suspenseful…

    Rollercoaster

    ★★★★

I was expecting Rollercoaster to be another silly movie cashing in on the disaster craze in the vein of the Airport movies (taking place amusement parks instead of an airport). However, aside from a couple of scenes, this is actually more of a tense thriller that revolves around the cat-and-mouse game between authorities and a clever criminal who is placing bombs in amusement parks. It's a smartly plotted film as both sides are trying to anticipate what the other will…

    ★★★

A sturdy, submarine disaster movie but it never gripped me the way it should have. I like how most of the focus is on the rescue itself. There is a lot of interesting problem solving going on as one thing after another goes wrong. The characters are a little dry but I really like David Carradine as the off-beat inventor of a mini-sub who is a bit eccentric but also intense when the moment calls for it.

    However, this ends…

    Black Widow

    ★★★½

Black Widow provided the MCU with the opportunity to make a spy thriller in the vein of Captain America: The Winter Soldier that could lean even more into the espionage (after all, Natasha is the one member of the Avengers who is actually a spy). For the first half, I got just that: an exciting, action romp through Europe and Russia that channeled the intensity of Mission: Impossible and the Bourne series. The hand-to-hand combat and car chases were brutal…

    The 9th Guest

    ★★★½

I love movies where a group of people find themselves trapped in a confined space where they have to survive and try to work together (think films like Cube, Exam, and even Clue). The 9th Guest is the first film of this sub-genre and I was surprised at how many of the tropes it establishes. You get the mysterious circumstances that bring everyone together, creating an air of mystery. You have the interplay and conflict between all the characters to…
