We are struck by the drums of classical Chinese music in the opening of Raise the Red Lantern, alongside the introduction of Songlian’s new life. honestly this movie is a lot of fun. it’s opening is insane and alluring alongside its title sequence, honestly one of my favorites. the character design is phenomenal and exciting, their personalities keep this film afloat, however it falls short in story. it’s disorienting at times in the sense that the characters drive the plot, despite their lack of development. the audience is thrusted into this perhaps anti-colonialist roboworld (yet horrifyingly pro-war and anti-refugee) vs ambition driven cat and mouse chase, but again, lacks weight. on short it’s visually striking and nuanced in character design, but lacking in plot development.
