Watched at The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures with William Friedkin present, before the screening, for a discussion with a member of the museum.

The discussion was great as Friedkin gave some backstory on how he got the job to direct The Exorcist. He said the film was denied by the following directors before it went to him: Stanley Kubrick, Arthur Penn, and Mike Nichols. They all had their own reasons to deny the film but Friedkin attributes him landing…

    John Fucking Woo!!!

Hard Boiled is balls out gunplay (gun-fu) and explosions. Not only do we get marvelous gunplay and some hand to hand combat choreography but also explosion choreography and interactivity with the environment. We see the reaction of the characters as the wall next to them is being shot to pieces and the destruction of walls, counters and furniture as guns and bombs go off. Everything is highly choreographed and stylized to epitomize the Woo style.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. The crosscutting between time periods was actually executed fairly. When I was younger, history was my favorite subject. First time I watch anything directed by Jim Cummings. This was actually great and I was engaged throughout. I liked the cross-cutting between the killings and the main character’s personal life. From what I’ve heard, there is supposed to be a parallel between the two entities involved. An interesting update on werewolf films. I look forward to watching the two other feature directorial efforts from Cummings.

This was good! Much better than the 2017 version. However, the film did feel very stretched out to cover a lot of ground. Some of it good, some of it okay, but all of it aims to propel the story forward. Some of the great moments of the film really hyped me up! One scene that I was surprised (and kinda bummed) about not making the cut was the nightmare scene! Hands down one…
