    Watched in preparation for Mank. Kane’s structure is downright masterful. The group of reporters casually rummaging through the various objects in his life, after we’ve just seen them all in context, is absolutely devastating. It’s true: no one can understand a man’s life simply by cataloging his riches. But the film moves far beyond that, essentially making cinema’s greatest “walk a mile in their shoes” argument. The casual flippancy with which off-screen voices mention the stove, the trophy, the jigsaw puzzle…

    Very problematic. During its peaks, Lost in Translation captures "being stuck" better than most movies I've seen. Coppola is great at mining moments of boredom and loneliness for emotional impact. Being by yourself in a place you don't know can feel like an empty experience. When Bob and Charlotte share that emptiness, there's an unspoken tension to their relationship that really elevates the film. The karaoke scene is just...ugh. Swoon.
