The Social Network

The Social Network ★★★★½

It's such a bold choice to open on your protagonist being completely unlikable and have him end up largely the same way, but there are so many points in between where he's given the opportunity to change, and that's what keeps the audience engaged. Mark says and does so many absurdly rude and uncaring things over the years depicted in The Social Network, but it's just as clear that he isn't happy. Facebook may be cool, but he still isn't, and whether or not we like him, we end up invested in what his life becomes and what he does next. It's a brilliantly constructed film, and it moves at a break-neck pace for something that could've come across so uninteresting and rarefied in lesser hands.
