Though it’s clear studio meddling kept this movie from being the hit it could Del Toro still shows plenty of style and control with this creature feature. The bug designs are creepy and the big twist is truly unnerving. Mia Sorvino is a delight as the lead and the wet and dirty atmosphere gives it a very dark castle feel. It feels a bit stunted but overall it is a satisfying watch.

A well crafted of not derivative submarine movie, but that’s fine submarine movies are really neat. The cast is top notch for this meat and potatoes story, the set is gorgeous, the tension is palpable and there are a few nice twists here and there to keep things just fresh enough. Not much more you could ask for to be totally honest.

There’s just something about this movie, maybe it was because I watched it as a young kid, or it’s mid of history, sci-fi and moral messaging. I’m not sure. It just has a certain quality to it, an earnest attempt to let kids know…
