honestly Iconic for the monologues obvi and this won’t be the last time i watch it, but more things have been cancelled in this movie rather than not lmaoo. still, a B– for the place it holds in my heart and memory even though it’s problematic as fuck.
i’m not really into binary thinking, but there seem to be two types of movies about making movies: films disguised as experiments in filmmaking, and experiments in filmmaking disguised as films. Symbio is the latter. you could use that as a reasonable metric to gauge your interest in this project. personally, i think i prefer the former. deconstruction that unearths a whole form or idea is more valuable to me than deconstruction for the sake of abstraction. in any case, i am grateful that this was created to teach the difference. definitely worth watching. other fave moviemaking movies? Day for Night, Living in Oblivion, Irma Vep
if anyone was able to squeeze a drop of enjoyment out of this unmitigated trash then i’ll let them have it. to me, any awards buzz around this rubbish is glaringly symptomatic of the academy’s disease at large. take a pea-brained morsel of a topical social issue, throw weighty names at it, slick it in #goodvibesonly pseudo-aesthetic, sit back and watch the mainstream gobble it up. it’s not film, it’s politics. it’s not “progressive”; it’s cotton candy. movies like this signal the death of art. fuck this movie. i could have done my taxes ten times instead of watching this
