FUCK this movie rules so hard
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
If I wanted to make movies and the first one I made was this good I would probably just quit making movies after that (this applies to the Coens AND McDormand but god am I glad they kept going)
Right off the bat the Coens nailed something in this that makes their stories so engaging: characters making decisions based on assumptions and bad information. Attention to detail and visual storytelling is flawless. Incredible colors and lighting. The series of events…
Kubrick has a way of making terribleness seem entertaining. The drill sergeant is a huge asshole but damn some of his insults are pretty funny.
First time noticing that Joker’s comment about the prostitutes also being enemy soldiers is a setup for the sniper scene.
The shot framing in the sniper assault is awesome and the fire-lit scenes towards the end are next-level. I don’t think Kubrick intentionally referenced other directors in his movies much but that orange sun during the early boot camp scene has to be a reference to Apocalypse Now.
