The Thing

The Thing ★★★

A good try! Following up on the legacy of the original clearly proves as not an easy task. Good luck to Blumhouse trying to do it again. At first, I thought, “You know what, I’m unbiased towards remakes, I’m going to go in with an open mind”, as I normally do with remakes. Then, as the film progressed, I realized recreating a story that already has an unforgettable uniqueness to it is basically a death wish. It’s different for films with formulas that can be expanded upon; slashers, found footage, the supernatural, the list goes on, but with The Thing... it’s one and done for me. It’s still an entertaining film to say the least, however there was no way it would match the magic of the original. And I know, I know, it’s based on a book. Still though, you know what I mean?

As for the CGI......,,,, well. You know what, there’s no denying the skill of the people that created the effects, they’re very talented. I just don’t know if their execution quite lived up to their ideas. The monster’s appearance teetered between okay looking and please get this off my screen, it’s so bad. Things progressed for the worse when explosions were added too. Again, very talented people, questionable application.

Still enjoyed the film as a whole, but yeah. I get the hate. Mary Elizabeth Winstead kind of the best horror actress of the 2010s though!
