Few films can move me so deeply, or seep into every space of my body the way Stalker can. Yet I am glad that so few films are like Stalker, for this gives it much of its power.
Even in a second viewing, even with the uncomfortable sense of intrusion by the presence of my polite but obviously disinterested father, even with my mother pacing around in the kitchen behind us, I still have that feeling I had upon first watching Stalker– that shell-shocked, dazed sense of having emerged from the most intimate level of consciousness. And now I must wake, and put back on all the layers of consciousness to protect the core, still raw
