Army of the Dead

Army of the Dead ★★½

It's exactly as indulgent as "Zack Snyder's Justice League," but the fact that he's keeping it simple and trying to have fun makes Army of the Dead a mite more successful. That its screenplay dates back to 2007 makes all the sense in the world, as everything about the film feels like an unsolicited throwback to the sorta-fun, sorta-bland mid-2000s horror/sci-fi/action aesthetic. The absurd running time and the bevy of stock characters drag things down at first, but eventually the kinetic setpieces and Bautista's arc amount to something fairly diverting and surprisingly touching. Of course, one must never discount the power of Stockholm syndrome.
