Blindspotting

Blindspotting ★★★★½

I'm pretty much at a loss for words right now. That happens occasionally but I usually wait to review the film, till I've "understood" it. In the case of Blindspotting, I think that is exactly what the movie wants, so prime time to talk about it.

Well...I just don't know how I feel about this! In a good way. I'll be thinking about it for a long time. The style of the film, especially the editing and cinematography is so, damn, flashy. But it worked for me. That's this whole film to me, everything made me go "well that's different" but after a moment of thinking it over, decided it worked.

One thing I do know, 2018 has been a great year for films dealing with racism and I think Blindspotting has to be my top pick in that regard. Just edging out Sorry to Bother You, and lightyears more effective than BlacKkKlansman. The interesting thing about how this is made is the racism is pretty low key, yeah it's talked about, but it doesn't get preachy or overstay its welcome (cough BlacKkKlansman cough). It is extremely over the top in how it's put together however. The editing, music, and cinematography really threw me, but that works in its favor. I was so distracted by how this film operated, the message was not overdone by any means, if anything there could have been more of it.

This film will promote great conversation.
