    The Wretched

    ★★★

The Wretched is a wild little yarn; 70s witch horror w/ an 80s teen sneer, but without the music cues and obnoxious costume design of nostalgia porn cashing in on either era. Bit more mean-spirited, too— always a good thing in my book. Won’t change the landscape of the horror genre or anything, but it does what it sets out to do.

    The Devils

    ★★★★★

Exorcism, purges, douches, purifications, cleanses. Movie’s obsessed with them. Eventually the film obfuscates that imagery with images of sin and depravity to the point where there is no longer any textual ambiguity. Ken Russell firmly believes that, in turbulent times, dancing with the Devil is the only way to transcend. Only through an orgy of vice and violence can a society become born again.
