A subsequent movement starting in the late 2010s to the late 90s early 00s 'New French Extremity' wave of sexually graphic and violent art films, this wave of transgressive cinema takes inspiration from the former movement to deal directly with themes of a post-technological society, queerness, and patriarchal violence. Compared to many of the grittier NFE modern classics, the same amount of grotesque imagery is incorporated into an aesthetic maximalism, often playing with artificial light and reflections to portray violence in a digital age. The center of this wave of films is French, but as it is a derivative concept, Canada and Scandinavia etc are also hotspots.
