In preparation for watching Mank
I've watched Citizen Kane a few times since I was first made to watch it in my freshman year of college in my intro film class, and there comes a time after every viewing where I think to myself "that movie isn't that great right?" Its legacy is so enormous that it seems impossible that the movie itself could live up to its towering place in film history and its all but consensus position as the best movie ever made.
But... those thoughts would be crazy. Immensely enjoyable, quite obviously prescient in ways that are almost boring to point out now, and just exquisite looking and feeling in every way. Lives up to just about anything you could say about it, and probably even outdoes its reputation. Good movie.
