----------

Hey bruv, hey man, hey fam. UGH. I hope those phrases don't annoy you because every other line of dialogue in Attack the Block seems to contain some variation of bruv or man or fam which gets old after the first 5 seconds but is carried on through the whole runtime.

The movie revolves around a group of young thugs out one night when aliens start falling from the sky. The movie is definitely going for a horror-comedy style, but the problem with Attack the Block is the same as many others of this genre, in attempting to do both horror and comedy the film ends up accomplishing neither. The movie isn't funny, it isn't scary or creepy, and it really fails at showcasing its action too with plenty of obnoxious shaking and cuts that add nothing.

Where Attack the Block really fails for me however, is the characters. These are a group of young thugs, and you'd think that maybe we'd see some charming or funny or interesting side to them, but then you'd be wrong. These kids are just a bunch of dicks with no redeemable features and I didn't care if they lived or died, and I was annoyed because the film even seemed to take their side over Jodie Whittaker's character and tried to force an emotional connection. The film also features a pre Star Wars John Boyega, and honestly he wasn't any good in this either.

Attack the Block is just another unfunny, unscary horror-comedy wannabe. People unironically compare this to Shaun of the Dead? That movie had so much more hilarity and entertainment, and heart - just watch that instead.
