This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I generally enjoy Lin’s work a bunch but this didn’t really work for me. The familial drama felt hollow with the edges and specificity sanded down, the energy was too frenetic with a lot of visual ideas thrown at me that didn’t quite stick, and the songs didn’t whollop me like the best moments in Moana, In the Heights, or Hamilton. Love the message at the end and the idea that they had to rebuild the foundation of their home into a place that values the individual more than their gifts, but the way it got there felt a bit too underdeveloped for my taste.

  • Showgirls

    Showgirls

    ★★★

I can’t tell how much of this is Verhoeven’s worldview or if it’s just him holding up a mirror to society but I find the notion of wielding sex and sexuality to assert power and dominance over each other to be unpleasant and not particularly edifying to watch. Can’t everyone just have a nice time :(

  • A Man Named Scott

    Jaden has an older brother???????

  • Halloween Kills

    Halloween Kills

    ★★★

Honestly the most stressful part of this movie is the fact the events depicted are probably taking place after 10pm, like nice try Michael Myers i have to get my 8 hours of sleep otherwise I’ll be grumpy at my copywriting job

  • Candyman

    Candyman

    ★★★

You’d think this movie would be less heavy handed given the ergonomics of a hook hand

  • Space Jam: A New Legacy

    Space Jam: A New Legacy

    ★★★

Lebron James tweeted a link to a twitch stream and then all my friends got Leftover’d :(

  • Black Widow

    Black Widow

    ★★★

Deducted a full star for the post-credits sequence and how little Marvel trusts us to be satisfied with a full meal of a movie

  • Space Jam: A New Legacy

    Space Jam: A New Legacy

    ★★★

Can’t argue that this is a “””good””” “””movie””” that is “””good for the world””” but I had fun with my family! Just like Lebron did!!!

  • 2 Fast 2 Furious

    2 Fast 2 Furious

    ★★★

Paul Walker is the composite embodiment of all the Christian boys I knew in college

  • Scream 3

    Scream 3

    ★★★

Was the stylist on Scream 3 a four year old with safety scissors

  • Don Jon

    Don Jon

    ★★★

Me: Somewhere in here is a really interesting dissertation on how porn heightens male aggression and deadens intimacy and it was really vulnerable for JGL to share this about himself especially coming from a puritanical background

Also me: haha wacky accent go brrrrrrr

  • The Twilight Saga: New Moon

    The Twilight Saga: New Moon

    ★★★

I like that the climax of the movie is Bella stopping Edward from taking off his shirt in public

Barring the problematic messaging the movie teaches young girls (not my place to expound upon), the dramatic engine of the movie where a despondent Bella is acting recklessly as a means to get the attention of her ex is actually quite compelling.

I’m ashamed of myself for the 30 minutes I was team Jacob. Team Alice all the way!
