Was not expecting Spring fucking Breakers to be an abstract thematic exploration of passive girlboss white supremacy being clung onto as to keep a vision of responsibity-less freedom and privilege that America promised you. Also, just an astounding fun time, straddles being atmospheric and overly absurd in such a special way. Can totally see someone finding this beyond obnoxious, but it works wonders for me. The lighting, transitions, and over-all experimental structure of this is to die for!
A show with amazing gags, fantastic characters, and inventive structure ultimately undone as a classic due to the themes that it either cannot truly support within its framework or that it actively fumbles. Yes, as the top review by disneydaydream writes, the show has much more on its mind than simply being a slice of life.
It shouldn't be demolished for refusing to give a happy ending to its audience. Shows can be so much more then purely entertainment machines…
The most impressive element of the film-making of US isn't how layered the script is with symbolism and intent. It's isn't the across-the-broad brilliance of all of the cast's dual performances. It's isn't even Peale's intelligent wielding of it's increased budget. What most impressive is the empathy Peale has brought to such a horrific story.
