Okay wow wow. I think we have it. A new contender for best movie of 2020, so far at least. Just phenomenal!
Firstly Riz Ahmed. Dude what a performance. I’ve always liked him, but here he cements himself as a seriously brilliant actor. He’s electric, and carries the film beautifully. You really care for the character and are on this difficult yet therapeutic journey with him. I better see an Oscar nom for Riz in 2021.
But the film itself - beautifully acted and shot, and an important and informative exploration into the stigma and ideas around deafness. One of the best features of the film is the sound design and audio - putting us inside the main character’s head, the audience only hearing muffled sounds and white noise like he does, then being taken outside and experiencing the stark difference, is so effective.
This is a must watch and surely has to be an awards contender. Amazing filmmaking.
