Pan's Labyrinth ★★★★

Guillermo del Toro has always struck me as a director/producer that lives and dies by his extravagance and indulgence, but even though I find the practical effects/set design to be stellar in this movie, I find the most value in the relationship between a mother and a daughter. their tender love for one another is extremely engaging and puts a true emotional anchor on the film. I do have a few pacing issues and dear god is the overabundance of ridiculous transitions obnoxious, but this film provides a heartfelt story, a dense political message, and some of the best practical effects I've seen in a while. a film clearly made w an overabundance of passion.

ps holy fuck does this movie has some crazy nightmare fuel that I did not expect
