Benjamin Zweifach’s review published on Letterboxd:
HORATIO THE DUCK!
On second watch, very close to a masterpiece. Does it matter that the fish eye lenses, seriocomic tone, and setting constitute a borderline explicit homage to Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon”? Perhaps it makes Lanthimos’s bizarrely dream-like farce of royal and aristocratic largesse a bit less original, but it doesn’t make it less effective or the performances less striking. Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and Olivia Colman deliver as impressive a triumvirate of antihero performances here as you are likely to see. The production design, costumes, makeup, and cinematography are all gorgeous (although again, those fish eye lens distortions may go a hair too far in Kubrick idolatry). But this was arguably the best film of 2018.
