Just like He Who Slapped and Mad Love a disturbing little movie under 90 minutes. The nihilism runs deep and it has that insular feeling of a dreamlike New York where, like Eyes Wide Shut, the streets seem depopulated and you're in an alternate version of New York. Truly a bizarre premise that actually ends up working. I think that might be due to to the fact that if the setting matched the story and tone it would be far too bleak and unwatchable. Lon Chaney is incredibly disturbing and oddly enough I liked a lot of the "diegetic" music. For 70 something minutes it covers a lot in terms of betrayal and setting up his revenge and it makes me really wonder if reverting back to 70/80/90 minute films would be a good thing for the medium.

Looks beautiful from start to finish. Watched while looking for Sopranos/Capitol Hill memes. Nice to think about Francis Ford Coppola's imprint on this as an executive producer, I wonder if he helped veer Burton from his cartoonish impulses and in the direction of his experience with Dracula.
