A profoundly moving film about grief, regret, and a Saab 900 Turbo, exploring the understanding of one’s self before it is possible to thoroughly engage with another.

I’ll be honest here. It’s late. I’m drained. I feel like I’ll ramble while processing the film. Please forgive the word salad that may follow.

This Ryusuke Hamaguchi visualization of the Haruki Murakami short story that sees its characters tackle Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya is tied together by the curious choice…

    TIFF 2021

Murina is a remarkable coming of age film under the pressures of a toxic patriarchy while navigating the confusing emotions of hatred and love, hormonal frustration, and a pseudo-Electra complex. An impressive feature debut for writer/director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović and lead Gracija Filipović. Most deserving of the Caméra d’Or.

The anti-chemistry between Julja (Gracija Filipović) and Ante (Leon Lučev) is potent. The vicious verbal bullying and aggressive threat of domestic violence inflicted by the father is in stark…

I maintain that this is an effective, worthy sequel. The energy that builds into the title card gripped me the first time, and still does. I was in its hands from that moment on. It’s fun, brutal and even a little clever. I get it if the twists and turns don’t land for some people, it asks a lot of the viewer at times. But even the unconvinced must recognize that it’s a good looking film.

I sing the “Paul” song with Annie every time.

When you watch a movie so many times, you look for your favourite little, insignificant things. The distant non-Illinois palm trees. Counting Jack-o-lanterns. Blue Öyster Cult on the radio.

Alright, horror-leaning cinephiles. You can get all barred up over Aster and Eggers as modern masters of horror. But James Wan has been delivering horror movies the way you think you remember them being for a while now. The Conjuring is popcorn studio horror at its finest, and sometimes (read: most times) that’s all I’m looking for. Wan is the George Washington and Abraham Lincoln of my 21st century horror Mt. Rushmore.

    “This is ridiculous.”

Ghosts are real in that they are the memories of our loved ones. If we cannot come to accept that they are gone, the denial will haunt us, and our despair will haunt those that remain. Hausu is an absolute bonkers trip of surreal filmmaking. It is tonally and visually off the wall from the jump, and it still managed to top itself with that outrageous ending. The all-in commitment to its experimental style, despite appearing very 70s,…
