• Dune

I’ve been waiting for this movie 3+ years now, and I still can’t believe it didn’t disappoint in any real way for me. Any sense of expectation melted away almost immediately and I was in the world of Dune, every visual choice a beautiful adaptation of the images I had when I read the book, every actor bringing the characters to life and more. The wait for part 2 is going to be ROUGH.

  • The Last Duel

    The Last Duel

This was great! Was honestly a little worried about the Damon/Affleck of it all performance-wise, but everyone in this is good or great and Affleck in particular is kind of incredible? Really swimming in the River of ham and I love it. Comer is the real star of this though, and she brings so much humanity to a character who represents so much but still feels incredibly real and authentic. Loved the structure of this as well, like the entire pitch was ‘bloody, medieval Roshomon’. Ridley is still killing it!

  • The Accountant

    The Accountant

I watched this last night and remember approximately 10% of it

  • Squid Game

    Squid Game

Fuuuuck yes. This kicked so much ass from start to finish. If not for Midnight Mass, this might be the best show I’ve seen this year

  • No Time to Die

    No Time to Die

Really had to sleep on this one. Incredibly well directed by Fukunaga with some excellent action and humor but profoundly saddled with the weight of closing out the franchise like this is the goddamn Skywalker saga. Craig and Seydoux continue to be an utter snooze and Malek is pretty actively bad in many crucial scenes. Idk, it’s certainly better than Spectre and Quantum but I don’t know by how much. Really think Craig killed it though, and I can’t stress enough how talented Fukunaga is behind the camera.

  • Quantum of Solace

    Quantum of Solace

Obviously insanely rushed, pretty poorly written and chopped to bits in the edit. Still ends up somewhat satisfying in the 3rd act in tying in themes from Royale but still, didn't age much better on my pre-No Time To Die Craig rewatch

  • Titane

    Long live the new flesh

  • Midnight Mass

    Midnight Mass

Flanagan at his absolute best. All of the character and heart driving every thematic and story choice, just incredible. Goddamn what a thing

Edit: Midnight Massterpiece more like it

  • Starman

Totally floored by this. Who knew one of Carpenters absolute best was Starman?! Honestly can’t believe we’ve slept on this thing for so long. Bridges is incredible, Allen is on another level. One of the best kind of sci-fi stories, part road movie/part fish out of water, and done basically as well as you could. Focusing on the human element at every turn but turning the Carpenter cynicism entirely to systems of power in the villains. LOVED this

  • Free Guy

    Free Guy

Slightly better than I thought it was going to be, not really for Reynolds or any of the comedy but I kinda dug the real world story outside of the game with Keery and Comer, and Taika unleashed and let loose to do whatever he wanted. Still, I much prefer this when it was Lego Movie/The Truman Show

  • The Mummy Returns

    The Mummy Returns

Such a downgrade from the first I almost wish I didn’t rewatch it. Still not without some fun moments though, and Izzy and his dirigible kick ass.

  • The Card Counter

    The Card Counter

another great addition to the ‘haunted man drinking whiskey and writing in a journal’ canon that Schrader loves, albeit messier in totality. Isaac is firing on all cylinders here but unfortunately Sheridan and Haddish didn’t totally click into the films weird tone for me. This also has a near ruinous score that I basically hated, something that feels rare these days, to be noticeably taken out of the movie by the accompanying music. Still though, the thematic twists and turns…
