• A Dark Song

    A Dark Song

What a debut of a feature for Liam Gavin who appears to have mastered the subtle but effective strokes of horror/thriller auters. And, wether or not you like the film is totally subjective but this one is going down as one of my personal horror favorites.

And, while I think the film succeeds most in its 1st 2 acts, I have a soft spot for those who don't write themselves out of a corner with lazy writing. Your faith is…

  • The Devil's Candy

    The Devil's Candy

Definitely a unique spin on the horror genre that seems to be poking fun at the supposed ties of Metal music to Satanism - the joke is about as deadpan as you can be without people starting to worry you're taking a pretty silly premise way too seriously

That said, I think there is a self-awareness here that helps blend the black-comedy with genuine moments of outright disturbing and terrifying horror.

All this aside, though, what ultimately keeps this film…

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I'm not sure who told James Gunn he needed to go "heavier on the humor," but he shouldn't have listened.

Where the first one took moments to breathe in some of the serious stuff, this one can't manage to make it through a funeral without laughing or making a couple of quick jokes that make what would otherwise be some seriously heartfelt moments into Saturday morning cartoons.

I'm really frustrated by this film because I LOVED the first one -…

Beautiful and tragic, if a bit condemning of anything that dares to be fun.

  • Arrival

I want you to remember a time in your life where you experienced a deep and resonant pain - a pain which has ripples still undulating into your quietest moments today. Would you change the circumstances of that pain if you knew it would change who you are today?

That's a question only you or I or anyone else can answer for themselves but, in essence, that's what Arrival is asking us to do.  But, as all good storytelling will,…

  • Ghostbusters

I really wanted to like this film. I've tried to keep perspective on it the throughout its production and during it's "controversy" and "reverse-controversy," never understanding the trolls who had issues with the women or the overly sensitive who kept the issue near the surface pretending like it was the culture at large who wasn't ready for this.

For most of us, if there was any issue, it was simply, "can this, at least, live in the shadow of the…

  • Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

    Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

A movie that thrives on skilled good guys, smarter bad guys, and girls who are the best of both.

Since JJ Abrams breathed modern life into the Mission Impossible franchise with the widely-revered MI3, each entry has improved up on it's predecessor. MI3 had a good story, an unusually intimidating villain, and great action - and it still felt like part of the initial Mission Trilogy, easily coming out as it's crowning acheivement. Then came Ghost Protocol.

    Brad Bird brought…

    Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I went in expecting a religious experience....instead I got the practical answer to setting up a new trilogy in a saga with high highs and low lows and, once I made peace with that, I was able to enjoy it quite a bit more. Definitely one you'll enjoy better on the 2nd go as your expectations will be reset.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I, at once, ready'd myself to give this 4 stars...yes...4 stars....then, after further consideration, I was ready to give it 1.5 stars....yes....1.5 ( the .5 earned only for the very fact that this entry is empirically better than the first installment in this, comparatively, sub-par franchise ) I realize this is a widely panned effort by those whose tastes are "higher," but I'd be remiss not to cite the initial impact this film had on me.

    Much more action-packed and…
