• The Virgin Spring

    The Virgin Spring

    ★★★★½

WTD Scavenger hunt day 13: A movie about revenge.

There is not always a catharsis in vengeance. This is the best way I’ve seen this thought played out since Mandy.

Many characters. So many characters, all with small roles playing into a huge story. It doesn’t seem like it should work, but it most definitely does.

  • O-Bi, O-Ba: The End of Civilization

O-Bi, O-Ba: The End of Civilization

    ★★★★

WTD Scavenger hunt day 12: A movie set in the future.

This isn’t a science fiction film, it’s just a day in Warsaw.

In all seriousness though, O-bi, O-ba is not as strange as one might expect. The film resides in a disturbing, hellish landscape, but it’s not the most out there apocalyptic film I’ve ever seen. It’s just fascinating to follow someone in a position of power as they navigate their own dying society. The main character is an average joe in a world without average joes. Interesting stuff.

  • The Evil Within

    The Evil Within

    ★★★½

You probably know the tragic tale that comes with it, but do you know how wacky this movie is?

It’s a testament as to why we need to just give a few million smackeroos to people and let them go crazy behind the lens.

  • The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

    The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

    ★★★★★

I had this logged a while ago but I sort of thought “Wait, have I seen it from beginning to end?”

I think the answer is no so I’m counting this as my first time. It is so not overrated though.

  • Exhumed

    Exhumed

    ★★★

An absolutely ridiculous no budget affair that features samurai zombies and the most awkward sex scene ever put to the screen.

A lot that was impressive, including the practical effects.

  • Django Unchained

WTD Scavenger Hunt “Day” 11: A movie set in the wild west.

If you don’t like this movie I totally get it.

Why’d it take me so long to see this

  • Spiral: From the Book of Saw

Spiral: From the Book of Saw

    ★★

Finally got around to this one. Frankly, this is a very strong concept for a Saw movie. It just ended up being a pretty generic cop flick. Like they even had a “I don’t do partners” thing.

The twist was not strong in this one either. Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan always managed to make you say “ohhhhhhh” when the twist came about but these new writers only got a “yeah, obviously” outta me.

Also these are some mostly forgettable…

WTD Scavenger hunt day 10: A movie set in space.

Vin Diesel and Cole Hauser have powerful voices. I love it. They brought a lot to what coulda been a pretty generic creature feature.

And looking at the Blu Ray special features, the director himself says it’s a “sci fi horror film.” So that little debate over whether or not it’s horror can be squashed.

  • No Sudden Move

    No Sudden Move

    ★★★

Boring title and the movie overstays its welcome, but my brother actually sat through it so it definitely did something right.

  • Cooties

    Cooties

    ★★★½

Anyone else sorta count the number of laughs comedies get out of you? I do. I think I got like eleven or twelve here. That’s enough for me.
