The Two Popes starts in an intriguing way but soon falls apart once it's clear there's no central story here. When it's legitimately just Pryce and Hopkins talking, it's enjoyable, but it gets caught up in a wholly uninteresting flashback structure that at one point spends around a fifth of the entire runtime of the film on a single dull flashback, completely disrupting the flow of the story to become a blander biopic than the simple conversation piece. It's an overlong slog with little insight that can't be found by simply looking up its subjects. An abject failure.
