It's a bit scattershot, but very worth a watch if you're even remotely interested in the subject matter.

Space Is the Place 1974
• Sun Ra wears hats.
• "So, do you want your spaceship to look like sperm or boobs?" "Both. And make it yellow. With flames."
• What's going on, man? -

The Dark Crystal 1982
Workprint VHS version:
The critic's consensus about this movie is that the story and characters are weak, despite taking place in an incredible visual landscape. I find, as I study it, that there are layers to the mythology and an inner life to the characters that is always hiding just on the edge of the frame. It's a beautiful masterpiece, and it's a damn shame that some have let it pass them by.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2003
I don't care how many Oscars Howard Shore won for this, it isn't enough.

Leviathan 2012
Some reflections:
• We see but we do not observe
• Damn, this season of Deadliest Catch took an artsy turn
• What does a can of Seagrams ginger ale really mean?
• I hope someone documented the moment where the French filmmakers explained to the grizzled new England fishermen that they were installing a camera in the bathroom for a shower scene -

The Empire Strikes Back 1980
Two movie tickets at the discount theater? $6.00. Bag of popcorn? $5.50. Going to the movies for the first time after a pandemic-induced hiatus to watch a classic with your lady and finding you have the entire screening room to yourselves? Priceless.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug 2013
Still 2/5. It's a big cartoon lacking in anything meaningful. There are moments of fun but most of whatever dazzle there was has long since worn off.
