Army of the Dead

Army of the Dead ★★★½

I haven’t been interested in zombies for a long time, but Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead shows how a talented, enthusiastic director can revitalize the sub genre and make it new and entertaining again. Yes, it’s long, chaotic, overwhelming, over-indulgent…but come on; this is pure cinematic popcorn right here. Pure R-rated fun, an action/horror hybrid taking it by the balls and squeezing. I honestly don’t see how horror fans would not enjoy this in some form or fashion; it surely delivers on its premise. Most importantly, Snyder brings his signature passion to the film —— he brings the passion.  And that makes the film a pleasure to watch.

I love the nods to Dawn, to Aliens, and especially the homage to American Werewolf in London at the beginning. Its a joyride. It’s all silly and cartoonish and over-the-top (and it has that cheap CGI look in places, common for Netflix films) but there’s no denying Snyder does this style well. He’s having a blast.  It’s not perfect. But I’ve been waiting for this since it was announced, what, four years ago? And my expectations were met.

Hopefully it eventually comes to disc. I only kept my Netflix subscription for this, and now that I’ve seen it it’s time to cancel. But I’ll absolutely have to watch it again. Watched via Netflix streaming.
