Between being underwhelmed by this movie and falling asleep watching Nashville, I'm starting to suspect that I just don't like Altman very much. I liked the gags fine, thought the shots looked nice, and was even excited to see some things I'd never seen before in a movie, but something about it just didn't really hang together for me, aside from it being a total mess. Love that Shelley Duvall, though.

Folks, it's a Kelly Reichardt movie, so it's obviously good and incredibly lived-in. I especially loved all the shots of Jesse Eisenberg just throwing shit into the woods and the dump out of expedience/apparent unawareness of irony. My one big complaint, I guess, is that with absolutely zero experience I feel pretty confident that I would be a better eco-terrorist than these dummies. They seem to spend almost no time whatsoever working on their night moves, and boy does it show.

I fell asleep watching this on HBO! Not very good! The complaint that Nolan has seemingly never engaged with human emotions gets more and more obvious with each new movie he puts out. I find this especially irritating because the idea of a filmmaker doing head-trippy, post-modernist films in the mainstream would actually be exciting, if only the person making them was better at infusing those films with the emotional through-line needed to make them actually enjoyable.
