I didn't watch this for a long time because I thought it was another classic manic pixie dream girl for hipster boys. But Eternal Sunshine examines that trope and turns it on its head.
That's just one example of the fantastic writing -- Kaufman's script carries the movie. This is the first film he's written that worked really well for me. The storytelling reminded me of Synecdoche, New York or I'm Thinking of Ending Things; it's similarly abstract and memories/thoughts/reality…
