Ben’s review published on Letterboxd:
There are film fans...then there’s Eric Binford. Fade to Black was much more of a character study horror than I expected. It shows us the life of a lonely film nerd who slowly descends into unhinged madness. The performance by Dennis Christopher is what makes the movie. The film references throughout are great, but he completely sells the crazy yet sad character. I feel bad for wanting more because this was clearly not a huge budget film. My biggest grievance is the cop/therapist subplot. Why must this always be a part of horror movies? Even worse is that the therapist comes and goes when it’s convenient for the plot. Honestly, the whole forced conflict between the therapist and the police captain at the end almost made me dislike the movie. Luckily, I thought it over for a bit afterwards and realized the good outweighs the bad. It’s still worth a watch in my book. Would make for a great double feature with Christmas Evil!
