Ben’s review published on Letterboxd:
Near Dark may be the finest damn vampire film I’ve seen. Dusty, gritty, sweaty. A neo-western road movie shrouded in Southern gothic atmosphere. I was into it from the opening frame. Night time portrayed on film is already my favorite aesthetic so seeing every after hours scene captured beautifully made me fall in love. Bill Paxton was a true treasure who never knew when to dial it down from 10. Lance Henriksen is as mellowly sinister as ever. Jenny Wright is stunning. Tangerine Dream’s score puts you in a nocturnal groove and keeps you there for 95 minutes. On top of all of this we get the best smoking/exploding vampires and a bar scene that is totally unforgettable. I was kicking myself when I didn’t watch this when it was streaming on the Criterion Channel. Thank you Shudder for getting the rights to this!
