The Favourite

The Favourite ★★★★½

Yorgas Lanthimos proves once again that he is one of the most interesting and visually unique directors working today. The film is very different in content compared to his other films, but it has the same visual flair.

The film includes a trio of great performances from Colman, Weisz, and Stone and a solid supporting role from Nicholas Hoult. A number of modern day period pieces like this lose me because of the acting and the stilted dialogue. This one does not fall into the trap.

"The Favourite" is easily one of the best films of 2018 and it is one of the best "costume dramas" I've seen in a while. The cinematography is stunning with so many bold composition choices and angles. Numerous wide shots, fish-eyed lenses, and intimate close-ups. It's one of the few recent films that feels like it has a planned visual structure to it. Also, the costume design and the production design are top-notch.
