The Favourite

The Favourite ★★★★

I've been thinking about it, and The Favourite deserves 4 stars... it's kind of a heady 4 stars though. Yorgos Lanthimos is certainly one of the more interesting directors out there today, and whatever he chooses to do is electric. However, I'm not 100% on board with him yet. It's exciting to see so many incredible actors flocking to work with him, and The Favourite showcases his technical skills. The way he uses wide-angle shots is something that's largely missing from the cinematic landscape today, and I love how he cues shifts in the dynamics by going extra-wide on rare occasion. So top notch!

I still feel like his late second act and third act wraps ups need some work, but this film connected with me a lot better than his previous ones. The last three minutes of The Favourite is masterful, but getting there was a bit of a trudge toward the end. (The contrast being a joyously giddy first half.) As far as I'm concerned, this movie is a huge step in the right direction.

Despite how much I like Lanthimos' typical absurdist dialog, I found this script (where he's not credited) to be much more to my liking. There's still some of that Lanthimos humor lurking in the scenes, but also more of a traditional bent that found my favour.

I liked it a lot, and I look forward to the next one!
