the way spike lee used the roots to portray the band in mantan and now the roots are the band that plays for the tonight show starring jimmy fallon, a white man that has performed in blackface.

    ★★★★

i think an issue i have with this is that the plot felt like different bits and pieces of a story were kinda just glued together at the last minute, but besides that, Ponyo has everything that makes a miyazaki movie phenomenal. it’s not an ignorance of pessimism, but rather a refusal. his environments push the boundaries of all convention whether real or mystical. i can’t help but be gripped fully by each and every frame

i was for sure excited for this, but i wasn’t anywhere near prepared for how powerful all of this was. whether moved to anger or sorrow or elation or just plain relief, this carries with it a weight seldom seen in documentary filmmaking, or just filmmaking in general.

movies that show broken people finding some sort of home within each other, and movies showing people make flawed decisions without jumping to justification or condemnation too harshly are sooo my thing. so yeah, this movie was pretty good besides a few flaws.

p.s i would like to formally apologize to the stranger sitting next to me for having to listen when i started humming when royals started playing.

everyone seems to talk about how wonderful and joyous that final scene is, but i can’t be the only one that feels like i’m watching people drink rat poison each time they take a sip of alcohol after what happened, right??

i don’t think i’ve seen a scene transition more jarring then when noah is flatlining and being rushed into the icu and literally 2 seconds later he’s perfectly fine and walking around with absolutely no explanation. i’m not one to think intentionally poke fun at tiny plot holes or anything but like,,, that’s just such lazy filmmaking

but also it’s really cute and watching this with ashley was so damn emotional and for what
