Hail the Conquering Hero

Hail the Conquering Hero ★★★★

A biting and full bodied examination of military worship, full of Sturgeon fast-talking, layers of political depth and writerly cunning. Bold for its time and still bold, rarely has a film so clearly dissected the American military complex. While Eddie Bracken finally wins me over with a great performance and monumental speech, it’s the side characters that elevate the material. That lovably colorful crew of Marines who move the story, the folks who believe in Our Hero the most. An ensemble of great talent bring the messaging to a head. Astute and clever, I did not expect this to be another Sturges classic, but it absolutely is one.
