Dear Oscar voters, cast your ballots here. Lee Isaac Chung. Lee Isaac Chung’s daughter. Hype man Alan Kim. You like cute kids don’t you? Here they are. Nominating this for its performances won’t make up for the Academy’s blatant racism towards Asian performers over the years. But it’s a start. Steven Yeun. Youn Yuh-jung. And I still have hopes for Han Ye-ri. EMILE MOSSERI YOU ARE A GOD.

I am so, so fucking over the moon about this nabbing THREE Screen Actors Guild nominations. Most pundits were predicting it would entirely miss out - glad they were all wrong.

Best Actor for Steven Yeun (unexpected but what a phenomenal nod) - incidentally if you haven't yet, check out his Actors on Actors chat with Riz Ahmed here . So many interesting discussions on representation in the industry here. And of course Best Supporting Actress nod for Youn…

Least favourite Taymor I've seen so far, but I do really like the others I've watched and rthis one has an interesting idea and some interesting bits in its execution, as far as biopics go I always appreciate a bit of originality, but Gloria Steinem's life seems like it deserve something with a bit more substance than this one.

Not nearly enough McDowell's and John Amos, but what little we get is the only part of the film that truly worked for me. The other stuff isn't bad, I'm a big Jermaine Clement fan and it's got a wholesome heart at its core like the original, but it just wasn't funny enough.

I Did Not Care a Lot for any of the characters in this.

Which is fine, many films have been built upon entirely reprehensible people. But the film never really gives me too much of a reason to care enough about what any of these nasty pieces of work are up to. I don't need to like any of them, but you gotta give me something to anchor my interest onto.

    Ouch.

This felt more stagy and theatrical than the play adaptations in contention this awards season, without being adapted from a play in the first play. It has that heightened overly dramatic theatre kid style that I kind of hate to begin with, and it does affect pretty much everything else.

Sam Levinson has some style as a visual filmmaker (that B&W cinematography and some of the early camera movements are commendable), but man is his dialogue insufferable.…
