Film Independent Screening.
Bit underwhelmed I’ll admit given the fascinating nature of the topic matter, urban African-American horseriding culture, as the narrative surrounding it never really comes to life and lacks focus to hone in on its strongest elements. What’s good is good, the father-son dynamic is nice but too many other subplots detract from the overall film, and it loses its footing down the stretch.
Performances are solid. Stranger Things’ Caleb McLaughlin proves himself to be a fairly solid leading man, Idris Elba is on fine form although a tad underused, Jharrel Jerome and Lorraine Toussaint offer some fine support.
