Top-shelf Savini gags... and not much else. It's a shame that I don't give a shit about any of these characters or the thin justification for their slaughter, because the violence is truly spectacular.
The opening made me briefly excited that this was a full-on period piece. As much as I enjoy going in as cold as possible on a film, sometimes it sets me up for disappointment.

What a waste of potential. Instead of doing something wholly fresh and original, good ol' fanboy J.J. Abrams bent over backwards to copy and remix elements from the original trilogy at every opportunity.
It's still fun, bright and filled with wonderful performances from old and new faces, but it just doesn't stick the landing. It's a fine enough starting point for Disney's new annual franchise, I suppose.
