    Malcolm X

    ★★★

Though this probably has a lot to do with the time it was made, the documentary leaves a lot of critical information ‘up to the imagination’, even about its key subjects. It fails to establish an overarching message or graspable timeline, and leaves many holes in Malcolm X’s history and legacy. While many of the artistic devices used were interesting and affective, the actual information doesn’t completely realize X’s life or impact. However, if paired with other sources or biographies, this documentary paints a more complete picture of the civil rights leader.

A string is gradually pulled taut throughout, but engagement never falters.

Honest and devastatingly heartfelt. Hug your parents, and hug yourself for their sakes.

Blended genuine humor with an equally genuine reminder to live holistically.

I want to hold onto how I felt the first time I watched this.

Every time it started leaning toward an overextension of symbolism, something sentimental— grounded yet still abstract— would reach out and pull me back.

As far as it’s deliverance of “horror”, it employed original/sparsely seen fear tactics (which were highly appreciated).
