The Card Counter

The Card Counter ★★½

Considering this was made by the same dude who wrote "Taxi Driver" and wrote/directed "First Reformed", this is a little disappointing. There are so many aspects of this film that are just so bland and dull. The atmosphere, the writing the cinematography... it's all just kinda meh. Even the story is VERY low-energy, which I found very uncharacteristic of Paul Schrader!

I guess "low-energy" is a good term to describe this film. It kinda seemed like most of the people involved with this were doing the bare minimum. The performances were all pretty lackluster, too. Even Oscar Isaac wasn't too great in this, and he's usually pretty good!

But as for what's good here, there are some interesting ideas displayed in this, even if the the means by which they were written were as subtle as a shotgun...

I mean, a group of dudes wearing American flag tops all chanting "U.S.A." in every scene they're, in? Really?
