    Not romantic in the least or comic in any conventional sense, this quasi-screwball comedy is a dark, scathing critique of its own genre and (by implication) the social and psychological presuppositions behind it. The critique is all the more effective and bitter for having shown, by a kind of reductio ad adsurdum, the cruelty and crudity of the genre’s common tropes and procedures.     Possibly the stupidest thing I have ever watched story-wise: the French-new-wavy plot twists make absolutely zero sense. But such irreverent playfulness (absent in Le Samouraï) is probably part of its charm, which is enormous. The black-and-white cinematography is formidably beautiful.

    A movie ostensibly about unhealthy obsessions. But does Schrader denounce them categorically? I doubt. Radical beliefs (Christianity or environmentalism) are all obsessions in some sense. This doesn’t prevent them from being good causes. And almost everyone in the movie except the obsessed (Toller and the couple) is in bad faith existentially. Instead of being a real Christian, Jeffers is something of a Sophist/False prophet/anti-Christ, speaking in Christian parlance & quoting the Bible to his own advantage while catering like a whore…
